The AOK (general local health insurance) is a statutory health insurance, whereby several independent health insurance companies are grouped together under a uniform appearance. Actually there are eleven independent AOKs, whose field of activity is limited to certain regions or federal states. In total, around 24.5 million people were insured with the AOK community in 2015 on average. According to the AOK, 1,380 branches are operated nationwide and more than 61,500 are employed by the AOK. According to the AOK Federal Association, expenditure on medical care for people insured with AOK amounted to around 75 billion euros in 2015. (fp)
