According to a recent study, broccoli can lower blood sugar
Broccoli can obviously naturally lower blood sugar in type 2 diabetics. This is indicated by the results of a team of researchers from Gothenburg. Sulforaphan, a breakdown product of the mustard oil glucoraphanin contained in broccoli, is responsible for the effect.
Sulforaphane is a phytochemical. It appears to have an anti-diabetic effect in certain type 2 diabetics. Like the diabetes medicine metformin, sulforaphane inhibits the body's synthesis of glucose in the liver. However, this happens in a different way than with the antidiabetic drug metformin and could therefore be combined with this in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
The study ran over a period of twelve weeks, in which the approximately 100 type 2 diabetics received either a placebo or dried powder, which had been obtained from an aqueous extract of broccoli sprouts, in addition to metformin. The glucoraphanin contained therein is converted into sulforaphane by chewing or under the action of intestinal bacteria. A distinction was also made in evaluating the two groups as to whether the test subjects were severely overweight.
Analysis of the data showed that the broccoli extract was able to lower blood sugar. In obese patients with poor blood sugar control In the sulforaphane group, sulforaphane reduced the long-term blood glucose value HbA1c from an average of 7.37% to an average of 7.04%.
